理屈で人を動かし、今日を変える

ハーバードの図書館で、彼女は窓を閉めたかった。同室の男は開けたかった。二人が選んだのは我慢の分け合いではなく、誰もいない隣室の窓を開けることだった。フォレットは争いの扱い方を三つに分ける。押し切る(支配)、分け合う(妥協)、そして双方の望みが丸ごと残る形をつくる(統合)。妥協した争いは必ず再燃する。手放したものを、人はいつかまた取りに来るからだ。彼女は対立を悪と呼ばなかった。摩擦は消すべきものであると同時に、機関車を走らせている力でもある。
「対立とは、意見や利害の違いが現れたということにすぎない。それは戦争ではない」
to think of it not as warfare, but as the appearance of difference, difference of opinions, of interests
対立を「敵が現れた」と読むか「違いが現れた」と読むかで、次の一手が変わる。彼女は後者しか採らなかった。
「対立=違いは、この世にある。避けられない以上、使うべきだ。責めるのではなく、働かせよ」
As conflict—difference—is here in the world, as we cannot avoid it, we should, I think, use it. Instead of condemning it, we should set it to work
摩擦をゼロにするのが目的ではない。摩擦は、機関車を前へ進ませている力でもある。

Domination, obviously, is a victory of one side over the other. This is the easiest way of dealing with conflict, the easiest for the moment but not usually successful in the long run
